Split-Top Roubo: Bringing Out the “Big Guns”

Although it pains us to do so, woodworkers have to ask for a hand once in a while. One of my next projects, the Benchcrafted split-top Roubo bench is one example of that. The bench calls for about 250-300 bd/ft of materials, in this case some rock maple I had cut from a log about 2 1/2 years ago after a hurricane came through Cincinnati. (Yes that can happen from time to time).

Installation of 100+ Year Old Hardware

100 year old hardware deserves a screwdriver like this one.

My chest lift hardware arrived earlier this week from Robinson’s Antique hardware thanks to Chris Schwarz for the recommendation. Although my poll from a previous post solicited input on brass over cast iron handles, Robinson’s had only one brass handle remaining. Cast iron it is.

The cast iron handles and screws arrived looking like they had a good century of ware on them including some type of black enamel finish, well worn and rust free. The owner indicated the handles were probably from around the turn of the century. They … Read More »

An Unsung Hero: Milwaukee M12 Tool Review

It seems like I tend to focus on my flashier, or more expensive tool investments. What’s not to like about Lie-Nielsen hand tools, or Powermatic or SawStop’s woodworking equipment. They rule.
